Dental Bonding and Composite Veneering
Ultra conservative cosmetic restorations for chipped and discolored teethDental Bonding and Veneering Are Ultra Conservative Cosmetic Restorations
The best use for dental bonding and or veneering is to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or misaligned front teeth.
Bonding involves placing tooth-colored composite material onto the tooth and shaping it to correct imperfections on the tooth’s visible surface.
The advantage of dental bonding is that it is relatively inexpensive. Bonding is an ultra-conservative way to restore a tooth. However, bonding will eventually discolor and is easier to break than dental veneers.
Teeth that are candidates for dental bonding and veneering include: front teeth that are rotated, undersized, severely chipped, heavily discolored, decayed, or have fillings that are failing.
It is not uncommon for a tooth or group of teeth to have a combination of size and alignment problems. Dental bonding and veneering may be an option depending on the severity of the problem. Other cosmetic dental options include porcelain dental veneers and all-ceramic dental crowns.
Composite Veneering & Tooth Bonding Procedures
Bonding begins with applying a very mild etching solution to a tooth to create a clean surface that permits the composite resin to bond to the teeth. The bonding resin is then placed onto the tooth, and high-intensity ultraviolet light cures the resin to the tooth’s surface.
After the last coat of tooth resin has been applied, the bonded material is sculpted to fit the tooth and then finely polished. The procedure takes longer than traditional metal fillings because multiple layers of the bonding material are applied to achieve desired results. Depending upon each patient’s case, the procedure may last between 1-2 hours. Composites last between 7-11 years.
